The theme of the CAAD Futures 2011 conference is
Designing with and for users [Participatory approach] This theme focuses on the relationship between contractor and user. When and how to involve users, how user participation influences the design process and so on. This theme covers mainly the following areas : - user-centered design - universal design - interface ergonomics - architecture visualization: virtual and augmented reality - ambient intelligence and smart environments - etc.
Designing together
This theme covers several understandings in respect of current issues in the field :
Team design [Collaborative approach] The increasing complexity of buildings and design/production process results in professionals having to engage more and more in collaborative work - even for small projects. Collaboration occurs between several teams of architects, between architects and engineers, architects and builders. The collaborative approach includes but is not limited to the following themes : - multidisciplinary approach to design, new practices - integrated design process - collaboration tools: synchronous vs asynchronous, local vs remote, hardware vs software, etc.. - application interoperability - etc.
Sustainable development [Environmental approach] Architecture has a major impact on the environment: energy consumption, pollution, noise, landscaping but also on social planning, preservation of heritage, etc. Designing together is therefore also to take into account all environmental aspects related to architecture, urbanism and territorial planning. As part of this conference, sustainable design includes : - evaluation and simulation of building performance - architectural visualization - environmental impact analysis - architectural heritage modeling - etc.
